Service Mission
Our Service Mission is threefold:
1. To create environments promoting recovery, personal responsibility, and mutual self-help.
2. To help communities prevent and reduce alcohol, other drug, and mental health-related problems through positive social change.
3. To share research and knowledge through training, consultation, and educational initiatives.
Services
At River Community, we offer a comprehensive and empathetic treatment program for individuals with co-occurring disorders. Our approach is holistic, focusing on personalized care from admission to post-treatment support, with an emphasis on family involvement, life skills, and recreational activities. Our multidisciplinary team of specialists, experienced in both mental health and substance recovery, provides dedicated and effective treatment. Staff, including those with personal recovery experience, work closely with residents, offering support guided by licensed psychiatrists and therapists. This collaborative effort is key to our commitment to each resident's recovery journey.
Admission and Diagnostic Assessment
Upon admission, each resident undergoes a thorough diagnostic assessment. This is crucial for determining the most suitable initial level of care.
Family Involvement and Support
We place a strong emphasis on involving family members in the treatment process. Regular support groups are organized to assist families in coping with the challenges of living with someone with co-occurring disorders.
Individualized Treatment Plan
Based on the diagnostic assessment, a personalized treatment plan is developed for each resident. This plan ensures that they receive the highest level of care tailored to their specific needs.
Life Skills Training
River Community focuses on imparting vital life skills. These include making appropriate living decisions, budgeting, housekeeping, transportation, entertainment, and meal planning. Additionally, we offer a supervised nutritional program.
Discharge and Transitional Support
Our services include comprehensive discharge planning, access to transitional living facilities, and aftercare support groups. These elements are essential for a smooth transition post-treatment.
Recreational and Leisure Activities
A variety of recreational activities and leisure opportunities are regularly scheduled. These include supervised community outings, day trips to amusement parks, and participation in various cultural events like plays and dances.
Our Approach to Treatment
SMRS ascribes to the principles and practices of social rehabilitation. The social rehabilitation approach is one in which addiction is viewed as being centered on the reciprocal relationship between the individual and their surrounding social unit.
Problems are considered not only individual problems but problems of families, communities, and society. The social rehabilitation approach provides levels of service/treatment in non-institutional settings, ranging from alternatives to acute inpatient care to supported independent living programs, socialization, and vocational services. Each level of service is designed to meet the resident's needs at a particular level of treatment. The resident may move through each level toward re-engagement with the family at a rate individualized to their specific needs.
To reach the goal of social rehabilitation, the programs integrate the following basic premises into a comprehensive program:
1
Abstinence from alcohol and all non-prescribed drugs is a prerequisite for effective program participation.
3
A highly structured schedule of activities is essential to the creation of new patterns of behavior.
5
A strong, long term case management effort is essential. The case management component must be integrated with all treatment services.
2
The program environment is an essential aspect of the treatment process. The environment must be designed and maintained in a manner which dignifies the people who attend and work here.
4
A comprehensive therapeutic milieu with services provided by a well-trained staff team is essential.
6
People working together can help each other to recover from mutual, shared problems. Participation in self-help groups will be emphasized throughout the program as an essential aspect of recovery.
7
Each participant will be loved, respected, and valued as someone with an important contribution to make to the community and society as a whole. Our task will be to help individuals find and develop their special gifts while helping them to learn a lifestyle based on abstinence and recovery.

Our Facility
Tucked away in the Angeles National Forest, River Community stands as a testament to resilience and hope. Our story began in September 1986, when Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) leased a former California Conservation Corps property to establish the first-of-its-kind program: a 39-bed residential treatment facility for adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
From our cozy living spaces to the serene outdoor settings, you'll gain a glimpse into the supportive environment where hope blossoms and recovery takes root.
